About Those Health Studies

Date January 24, 2007

Have you seen Steve Pavlina’s Self Development blog? You should. He has a nice article on all those health studies that we hear about in the news.

Controversy sells. Or gets good press, anyway. If you produce a health product, or any product, it’s in your interest to push the benefits of that product and suppress any problems with it. Follow the money. It’s also in your interest to put down the competition.

Another thing to consider is that there really is too much info out there for anyone to learn and understand. If you spend your 20 years of higher education and residency to finally become a brain surgeon it doesn’t mean that you know anything about nutrition. Most medical doctors don’t. But then, most nutritionists don’t know anything about brain surgery, either.

Then we have all the various forms of alternative medicine and health topics. Yoga, tai-chi, acupuncture, herbal medicine, crystal healing, organic foods, etc.

All of these areas of healing have enthusiast proponents who will provide logical arguments as to why their system works. All have their proponents who will slam the others and most of the alternative will slam western medicine. Despite the fact that western medicine, warts and all, has saved millions of lives.

So what’s the point? Steve says it really well. Find out what works for you.
Steve says:

Often people ask me what I think of the latest health study about the benefits of X or the harmful effects of Y.

I usually tell them I consider it meaningless.

Here are four reasons why I don’t rely on “scientific” studies for making personal health decisions…

Here’s the rest of his health studies article. Read the whole thing.
